Goji Berries are also known as Wolfberries or the "Happy Berry" due to the sense of wellbeing it is said to induce. The sweet berries are commercially grown in China but also grow on vines in Tibet and the Himalayas. The berries are very delicate and must be shaken from the vine rather than picked to avoid damage. Berries are then preserved by slow drying in the shade. In China, the berries have been traditionally used for over 3,000 years, to promote good health, stay young and prevent illnesses.

WHAT CAN THEY BE USED FOR?

SNACKS
Naturally sweet Goji berries can simply be used as a snack and nibbled straight from the packet, like any other dried fruit.

BREAKFAST
Start the day with a nutrient packed breakfast. Goji berries can be added to cereals or muesli, milkshakes or smoothies, either dried or soaked in liquid for a few minutes.

RED BERRY TEA
Berries may be used to make a delicate red berry tea, with a blush pinky orange tint. Herbal tea is best made using chopped goji berries, put through the mixer for a few seconds. Pour boiling water over a teaspoon of chopped berries, leave for a few minutes and strain. Tea filters (empty teabags) may be used, avoiding the use of a strainer. This tea may be drank with or without added sugar.

WINE
In China, goji berries are also used for making local wine.

BAKING

Goji berries can be used in baking recipes and can replace currants or other dried fruit. They are often used for making muffins/scones or baked into fruit breads or puddings.

COOKING THE HEALTHY WAY
In Asia, goji berries are also used in the preparation of hot dishes. It is best to soak the berries in water for a few minutes before adding them to the prepared dish. Add at the last minute, to maintain a maximum amount of nutrients.

NOT FEELING TOO WELL?
Why not try homemade chicken soup with a handful of soaked goji berries added at the last moment? This makes a great nourishing comfort food to lift spirits. Adding crushed garlic, also at the end of cooking, may help if you are suffering from cold symptoms.
