               CHILDREN'S HERBAL REMEDIES

We must be careful when giving herbal treatments to children. Some herbs are very powerful and are not suitable. All the following can be used safely. However, do not give babies under 6 months any medication or remedy, without professional advice.
Children may not like the taste of some remedies, so add a little honey or apple juice.

If a child has a fever approaching 39C (102F) or if your child has any unusual symptoms, you need to seek medical attention. If you are not sure, always err on the side of caution and seek advice.

FOR HEADACHES, EARACHE & POOR SLEEP

Try massaging a little lavender essential oil, into the temples or onto the chest. For mild earache, add a few drops of lavender oil to cotton wool and place in the ear.

We offer wheat and lavender soft toys which heat up in the microwave. These are a great means for soothing children  and  helping them to fall asleep.

Lavender Essential Oil
Lavender is one of the most useful oils. It is antiseptic, it relieves skin inflammation and is good for burns and scalds or insect bites. To bring relief to headache, neck and shoulder tension,
massage a few drops into the temples or the back of the neck. A few drops on a pillow will help sleep. If you have only one oil, this is the one to have. Lavendula angustifolia 10ml

The best one for this is gentle camomile tea. We offer both regular and organic camomile teas. If car sickness is a problem, try giving the child a ginger biscuit before leaving. DIARRHOEA

Raspberry leaf is a good and gentle remedy for childrens diarrhoea. It can be taken as weak tea or as a cooled (but not too cold) drink.

Raspberry Leaf   Tea

Traditionally, Raspberry Leaf is used to aid childbirth, relaxing the cervix and toning the muscles. Can be taken as a daily infusion during the last three months of pregnancy, freely during labour to ease contractions.. DO NOT take during the first three months of pregnancy, and always ask your doctor's advice first.

It has a strong astringent action - tea makes a gentle and effective remedy for diarrhoea in children. Can also be used as a gargle for sore throat. Raspberry leaf may help heavy menstrual bleeding and is sometimes used to relieve PMT and period pains.

CONSTIPATION

Linseed, or flax seed at it is otherwise known, can be used by children and adults alike for constipation. At the same time, avoid cheese, eggs and white rice and drink plenty of  water.

Linseed
Linseed is taken as a food and has the added advantage of being a rich source of protein and omega 3 oils.

80g Golden Linseed
Soak 1 tablespoon of seeds in at least 5 times its volume of warm water. Leave for a few hours, then swallow,  with additional water. Water must be taken in considerable amounts as the seeds soak up large quantities. Children may take smaller amounts. It is best to lightly crack the seed first, applying pressure with a rolling pin, for example.

WORMS
If your child has worms, you will see what resembles thin white threads when they visit the toilet. They may also have an itchy backside at night time, which it when the worms lay the eggs at the entrance of the anus. You can buy tablets from the chemist, but there are more natural ways to banish them.

Pumpkin seeds may be chewed or chopped and added to cereal. Garlic is useful but is best taken as capsules for children. Thyme can be added to food or taken as a tea. It would probably be best to treat all the family at the same time as reinfection may occur. Everyone should constantly wash their hands, sheets should be washed and toilets cleaned frequently.

Garlic
Garlic is known to have the ability to reduce high blood pressure and cholesterol. Has antiviral and antibacterial properties. Good for worms.

* Free from added sugar, starch, gluten and yeast.
