HERBS AND REMEDIES FOR
CONSTIPATION

Constipation is when you have difficulty in passing stools, when going to the toilet. You may find yourself straining, or feel that you have not completely emptied your bowels. You may not be able to empty your bowels at all. This can occur to men, women and children of all ages. Women, however, tend to suffer twice as often as men and the elderly are also more prone. In pregnancy, 40% of women suffer at some point from constipation.

AVOIDING CONSTIPATION
To avoid having constipation, eat plenty of fibre, fresh fruit and vegetables, cereals, wholemeal bread and pasta, and brown rice. Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day - water is best, about 6-8 glasses per day (1.2 litres). Do not ignore the urge to go to the toilet, waiting will make things worse. Taking exercise regularly, at least 30 minutes per day, will also help to avoid constipation.

WHY ME?
This condition may be due to a change in your eating habits, being under or overweight, anxiety or stress and taking certain medication. If you are taking medication and the symptoms persist, you must speak to your doctor, but do not stop taking the medication. Constipation normally only lasts a few days, however for some people it is a long term, chronic problem.
IF PROBLEMS PERSIST, SPEAK TO YOUR DOCTOR.

REMEDIES
Linseed, or flax seed at it is otherwise known, can be used by children and adults alike for constipation. At the same time, avoid cheese, eggs and white rice and drink plenty of  water.

Linseed
Linseed is taken as a food and has the added advantage of being a rich source of protein and omega 3 oils.

Soak 1 tablespoon of seeds in at least 5 times its volume of warm water. Leave for a few hours, then swallow,  with additional water. Water must be taken in considerable amounts as the seeds soak up large quantities. Children may take smaller amounts. It is best to lightly crack the seed first, applying pressure with a rolling pin, for example.
