HERBS AND REMEDIES FOR
INSOMNIA
There is nothing worse than going to bed and not being able to sleep. Generally, it happens just on the odd occasion, but for some people it is a real long term problem.
Whilst certain herbs can help, using a combination of the following remedies and hints, may prove more effective. We spend a third of our life sleeping, so make sure you invest in a good, comfortable bed and mattress.
LAVENDER
Lavender is a wonderful calming herb which can be used in so many ways. Try adding essential oil to your pillow or using a wheat and lavender bag gently heated in the microwave. Small muslin bags filled with lavender can be placed between bedding or a bowl of dried lavender flowers in a room will also set a relaxed mood and they look and smell great.

YOUR BEDROOM
Invest in a good bed and mattress.
Make sure that curtains are properly closed and dark enough. It may be necessary to invest in black-out curtains or blinds.
Do not have your office in your bedroom. Other things to be banished are televisions and computers. Do not sleep next to your mobile phone (it may even be unhealthy). If you have an alarm clock, prefer a traditional battery clock to a clock radio. All electric items have electromagnetic fields that may make sleep difficult.
HERBAL TEA
Camomile is known for its naturally calming effect.

YOUR MIND
Clear your head before going to sleep. Do not lay worrying that you will forget something the next day. Write it down before going to bed, then relax and forget about it until morning.
Do not do paperwork or paying bills just before going to bed.
YOUR BODY
It has been found that wearing warm socks in bed will help those with poor circulation to sleep.
Some people may find that eating before going to bed helps. Try a banana, piece of cake or glass of milk.
Eating calcium rich food, such as dairy products, oily fish, eggs, nuts, sesame seeds and green leafy vegetables may help.
Try a warm bath with dried camomile flowers or lavender essential oil. Add 10 drops of lavender oil mixed with 1 teaspoon sweet almond oil, and add to your bathwater.
